Abstract film by Longheng Tan
We all don’t see the beauty of small objects around us. I want to focus on finding the beauty of small things and their incredible movement by using a close-up lens in my project. This will be an experimental film that aims to explore and capture the beauty of moving soap bubbles and oil.
Before getting to the point where I am right, it took a lot of complex research, and there are many times that I kept on changing and changing to get what I wanted for my film. Last year, I proposed a proposal to film a documentary about my close friend who moved to New Zealand not too long before I moved here. The interview in the documentary will include her struggle of adapting to a new country and the work she faced in high school as a teenager. The documentary will focus more on the visual styles than the narrative side. Let say that I want to have fun making it. I know that I love colors, and I wanted something around that. I did a lot of research; my first idea was to drop paint in the water and film it. I had seen a previous student do that before, and also I did that as well last year, so I ended up not doing it. The second idea was to film a moving car and animated illustrations characters on top of it. I felt like it would be the same thing as what I am doing for my major, so I decided not to go with it and go with new ideas. That is when I asked myself what do I want to do and explore for my final project? What do I want to get out of this paper?
